THE volunteers behind a spectacular display which transforms a corner of Ulverston into an enchanted wonderland have been nominated for an award.

Every October, a band of dedicated townsfolk organise sideshows and light hundreds of candles for the town's annual Halloween walk.

Now they are in line for a Heart of Ulverston Award after being nominated by a member of the public.

The nominator, who has asked to remain anonymous, said: "If you've visited this event you would understand how difficult it is to describe how the small group of organisers manage to put on such a show.

"Fire dancing, shadow screens, 600-plus candles, pumpkins, music, story telling and lots more.

"The committee of the Candlelit Walk selflessly give up their free time to work each year, putting on a fantastic free Halloween spectacular for all the family.

"They wholeheartedly deserve to receive a Heart of Ulverston award."

The walk committee have been nominated in the CommuniTy Group/Project of the Year category which in the past has been won by the Hoad Monument Keepers and the Ulverston Dickensian Committee.

Jenny Dennett is one of the volunteers.

She said: "We meet once a month to discuss what we can do to make Halloween about more than trick or treat.

"The event really has grown over the years and is great for families. We get support from Wax Lyrical who give us wax and have been lucky enough to get some small grants more recently.

"It is fantastic news that what is such a great community event has been recognised in this way."
