A BROWNIES unit is hoping their tea-fuelled walk down memory lane will be a piece of cake.

The 1st Urswick Brownies are celebrating their 40th birthday with an afternoon tea open to past, present and future generations of Brownies and helpers. The fun-filled celebrations will take place on September 23, from 2pm until 5pm in Urswick Recreation Hall.

Plenty of entertainment will keep the generations busy, including crafts for the children, cake, and all kinds of memorabilia from the past. Anyone who has ever been part of the Urswick Brownies is urged to attend for a chance to see their face in scrapbooks from across the years.

Eleanor Dixon, the present Brownie leader, said: “We’re having an afternoon tea to celebrate, and the children will bring cake. There will be lots of photos from the past and present.

“It’s a great opportunity for all the old Brownies to come and get involved. I am hoping that everyone will be there!”

The anniversary will remember past generations of leaders, including Marian Salway who dedicated nearly 30 years of her life to the 1st Urswick Brownies from 1980 onwards. Mrs Salway also acted as membership support co-ordinator for Girlguiding Cumbria South and, as an outstanding pillar of the community, she was given the Diamond Champions Award from the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service in 2013 before she sadly died in 2015.

The Brownies enjoy meeting every Monday for a character-building hour and a half of crafts and games.

Mrs Dixon added: “Brownies is about getting the girls together and letting them lead. It’s all about what they want to do. Through Brownies they do various activities, meet new people, go on camps, and build their confidence.

“Lots of the girls go to school in Low Furness, and there’s a nice feeling of community.

“The Brownies are involved in the Rushbearing festival the day after the anniversary, celebrating the heritage of the village. It is going to be a very busy week for the Brownies!”
