GENERATIONS of Brownies gathered for a trip down memory lane as they celebrated their 40th anniversary with an afternoon of tea and treats.

Urswick Brownies got together for the event at the village's recreation hall, which was filled with nostalgia, marking the special milestone of the girl's group.

Present leader and Tawny Owl, Eleanor Dixon helped organise the afternoon tea.

She said: "It's just a great opportunity for everyone to get involved and join in.

"It's a nice community activity and it's all about getting them active.

"The group is way more active than it used to be and we go camping, do lot of team activities.

"We have one girl who doesn't go to the same school as they others but you'd never tell, they are so inclusive."

Miss Dixon was a Brownie as a child and got back into the unit after returning to Urswick after university and has been a leader for around seven years.

Brown Owl, and group veteran, Catherine Thorpe praised the work of the Urswick Brownies, and said: "The girls just think of everyone.

"You ask the girls to do something, and they just do it - they are so independent.

"It's nice seeing what they get out of it, and it's always lovely to hear that they have had fun."

The supply teacher, who also lives in Urswick, has spent most of her life in the group after joining at the age of three.

Brownies of the past and present enjoyed the celebratory event which was held from 2pm until 5pm and served up offerings of homemade cakes and finger sandwiches, freshly made.

In keeping with Brownie tradition, former members came from far and wide, with 22-year-old Lucy Baldwin travelling from London especially for the get-together.
