AN award-winning saxophonist has made her debut at one of the world's greatest classical music festivals.

Ulverston's Jess Gillam performed at the BBC Proms on Thursday night, playing in the spectacular celebration of movie legend John Williams, best known for writing the scores to ET , Jaws and Star Wars .

Former Ulverston Victoria High School student, Jess will be taking centre stage again at London's Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, July 23. She will be playing in Proms 11 and 12 which are more geared towards a younger audience, according to the performer.

She said: "It's been my dream to play at the Royal Albert Hall since I was about 10.

"I couldn't have prepared for the amount of people there - I think there was abut six thousand people.

"It was absolutely amazing and the audience were so attentive the whole time and just really wanted to be there."

The 19-year-old previously said she was a "little nervous" about the event but praise has flooded in for the BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist with fans taking to social media to express their delight.

Jess will perform in Liverpool on Friday night before heading back to London to rejoin the rest of the Proms musicians.

She said: "I just can't wait to get back on that stage.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing the reaction of the children who come."

The Proms have also taken a special interest in the Ulverston musician and will be making a film about her debut which will be shown on BBC 2, on Saturday.

Jess studied at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music and has now entered the Royal Northern College of Music with an Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music scholarship.

She has a busy schedule this year taking her across the country, including a performance with the Southbank Sinfonia at London’s Barbican Centre.
