AN extreme athlete made Father's Day 2017 one to remember as he crossed the line in second place in a gruelling triathlon.

Paul Rodger of Ulverston Tri Club smashed the Lakesman 2017 to become the first Cumbrian to complete the challenge.

He was among almost 400 athletes taking part in a 2.4-mile swim in Derwentwater, a 112-mile bike ride up the Cumbrian coast and a marathon around Keswick.

The Lakesman was started by mayor of Keswick Susan Leighton.

She said: "This is a great event for the town, as it brings in people from all over the country.

"I was talking to a competitor from Dorset. It's good that Keswick has the facilities to put this type of event on."

Dorset was nothing compared to one competitor however, who travelled from Texas to take part in the event.

The winner of the Lakesman was Joe Duckworth, of Chorley, who finished in nine hours and 15 minutes.
