A MAJOR supermarket has decided to give back to the community - and is not only introducing a collection point for the foodbank, but  also plans to make regular donations.

Booths in Ulverston has teamed up with Barrow Foodbank and opened a collection point in store.

This gives shoppers in Ulverston a chance to easily donate to the charity which helps so many that reach crisis point.

Alison Griffiths, warehouse manager at Barrow Foodbank, was delighted with the news.

She said: "One of the Ulverston Foodbank volunteers wrote to Booths and asked them to help as more and more people are using the foodbank.

"It's been in the works for several months as the floods delayed things but now it's all sorted, Barrow Foodbank is tremendously pleased to have a partnership with Booths who will also be donating excess bread and produce to the foodbank."

Last year Barrow Foodbank, which has satellite sites in Ulverston and Millom, calculated that they were giving more food out to clients than they were taking in.

Miss Griffiths said: "This will help us meet the demand for feeding people in crisis in the Ulverston area. It's crisis food rather than long term support.

"Booths have gone above and beyond for the foodbank - more so than any other supermarket."

Colin Porter, the customer experience manager for Booths, said the new collection point isn't just about customers donating, but also gives them the opportunity to "make a difference".

He said: "We need to support local people and local charities and because we are in the food industry the food bank is ideal.

"This will allow us to engage with people in need - we can help and support them.

"People do want to help but they needed an outlet to do so and this is what we have provided."

Mr Porter went on to explain that due to packaging being damaged or labels being printed incorrectly, the food can't be sold in store.

He said: "Any surplus food that we are unable to sell for many different reasons we will be donating to the foodbank.

"It's about working in partnership. It's about donating products that will make a difference to people's lives."
