MORE than 200 fans from across the globe will descend on a comedian’s birthplace to host a huge event in his honour.

The Sons of the Desert Laurel and Hardy Worldwide Appreciation Society will hold its 2016 international convention in Ulverston from Wednesday July 13 until Sunday 17. The event, organised by enthusiast, Chris Coffey, will include a day of activities at the Coronation Hall as well as events at the Laurel and Hardy Museum.

Mr Coffey is also looking forward to Another Fine Fest on Saturday June 18, which will include a bid to set a new world record for the biggest custard pie fight. Organisers hope for around 1,100 people to turn out to the event at Ford Park.

Mr Coffey said: “Laurel and Hardy epitomise fun and laughter and I am sure the shades of Stan and Ollie will be smiling down on Ulverston’s bid to set a new record for this classic slapstick gag.”

Other special features of the event will include the creation of a special commemorative beer by Ulverston Brewing Company. The new tipple will complement its wide range of ales already inspired by Stan Laurel, the town’s most famous son, and his partner in comedy crime.

Ulverston Town Council is also organising a live video link with Harlem in Georgia, the birthplace of Oliver Hardy.
