RESIDENTS and staff at a care home near Ulverston were transported back to decades gone by when they glammed up for a vintage day.

Aldingham Nursing Home put on the special themed day on Thursday, welcoming singer Kerri Layton, known as Lady Layton, to Aldingham Hall.

The performer wowed the audience with her silky smooth jazz vocals and got a well deserved round of applause.

Some of the elderly residents got into the spirit of the day by dressing up in vintage attire and they enjoyed afternoon tea.

Nicola Henry, activity co-ordinator at Aldingham Nursing Home, said the idea behind the day was to create some fun, build new memories and remember old ones.

Miss Henry said: "It was really good. All the residents loved it.

"All the staff dressed up in 1940s and 1950s gear with all the dresses and all the victory rolls in their hair.

"A lot of our residents have got dementia but when we walked through the door they noticed it immediately.

"We do reminiscing therapy a lot by going through pictures and we have got a big screen to show old pictures but this was the icing on the cake."

Lady Layton, who attended Askam Primary School, Dowdales and Ulverston Victoria High School and is now based in London, recently performed with Roxy Music and shares the same agent as Lady Gaga. She has toured Europe and will return to Barrow when she embarks on her first solo UK tour in November.
