A TOWN's mayor has thrown his support behind a local park's push to get more people to sign up as members.

Ulverston mayor Councillor Mark Wilson scaled Hoad on Wednesday to support Ford Park's Membership Week drive.

Cllr Wilson said he was happy to support the plan to attract 1,000 new members to the park.

He said: "It recognises the need Ulverston has for a community hub. I've been very pleased to have Ford Park House and the Coach House as places that you can hire, meet in, or plan community ventures.

"The strides and advances that they have made have been quality. Every year they have got better - it's quite an achievement."

Chief executive of the Ford Park Community Group Ali Alger was thrilled the council was backing them.

She said: "It's fantastic we've got the support of Ulverston Town Council. From the mayor joining us to help promote our membership drive to the Sir John Barrow Monument being lit up green on Wednesday night in support of Ford Park, it all helps to highlight the important role Ford Park plays in Ulverston.
