A MAN has been arrested after a number of chemicals were found at a house in Ulverston.

The Evening Mail understands that emergency services were called to a house in Weston Avenue in the Croftlands estate in Ulverston at around 2pm yesterday.

Police are still be guarding the property, where a number of hazardous chemicals have been found.

A 29-year-old man from Ulverston has been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the supply of Class A drugs. During the arrest, a stash of chemicals was found at the property.

One nearby resident, who lives round the corner, spotted the huge emergency services presence while walking his dog.

The man, who asked not to be named, said: "It's very dramatic, especially for Ulverston.

"Everyone's talking about it, it's a man and his mum who live at the house."

A fire crew from Manchester, trained to deal with hazardous chemicals and which typically responds to counter terrorism operations, was called to travel up to South Cumbria yesterday.

The fire crew have been put up in hotels in the local area and will today be continuing their assessment of the chemicals.

It is understood the investigation was launched following police intelligence. There is no suggestion the incident is terrorism-related and there is not believed to be a risk to the public.

In a statement, police said: "Police have arrested a 29-year-old man from Ulverston on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

"The arrest was made yesterday (15th June). Following enquiries, chemicals were found in a property on Weston Avenue, Ulverston.

"Police are working with specialist fire service resources in order to safely remove the chemicals from the property. Part of Weston Avenue is closed in order to do this.

"The male remains in custody for questioning.

"Police would like to reassure members of the public that there is no believed risk to them at this time."
