An Ulverston teenager is over the moon after securing her dream place at one of the UK's top universities.

After hundreds of early mornings, hours of revision and a monumental effort, local fundraiser Milly Pyne has successfully passed her A-Levels.

For years Miss Pyne has proudly carried on the legacy of her sister Alice, who passed away in 2013 after a five-year battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

She now intends to channel that same passion and dedication to fighting inequality at home and abroad when she begins her sociology degree at Newcastle University.

As the realisation of what she had achieved began to sink in, Miss Pyne said: "I've done GCSEs before but this stage is so much more important in deciding your future. I came out of my exams back in June and I had no idea if I'd gotten Ds or As in them."

Fortunately, Miss Pyne made the grade being awarded ABB in art, English literature and English language.

She will not be taking this achievement for granted, admitting when she started at the Lancaster Girls' Grammar School she "struggled" at first.

Asked why she chose to study sociology, she said a strong interest in gender equality made her wonder how people were brought up to perceive others.

She said: "It is kind of a risk but I'm really interested in gender equality, I'm very much a feminist and I want to learn how people are brought up to perceive others. Raising awareness of how to change perceptions of people is very important."

The socially-minded Miss Pyne has lofty ambitions, hoping to one work for an NGO, a charity, or even the United Nations.

Although she is moving more than 100 miles from home, she will still be a very active part of the Alice's Escapes team, adding: "As long as the charity is going I will be here."
