AN Ulverston curry night fundraiser was the hottest event in town.

Some 350 people enjoyed a curry and a beer at the first St Mary's Hospice Currynation Hall event, held at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston last night (Friday).

In inaugural curry themed fundraiser featured an eye-watering contest to see who could manage seven hot chutneys, prepared Sam Halpin, of Delish in Barrow.

Remarkably all the fearless competitors completed the scorching challenge and emerged as winners.

The Coronation Hall became a pop-up Indian restaurant for the night. Chefs from Ulverston restaurant Naaz worked with Furness College catering students to create tasty curries enjoyed by the event goers with real ales from Ulverston Brewery. There was also live music on the night.

The event was devised by Bob Qazi, the compere on the night, and Geoff Steele to raise funds for the hospice and to encourage men and young people to become more aware of health risks they may face.

Other organisations supporting the event, included the Sun Inn, Kimberly-Clark and Cater Kwik.

Sarah Simpson of St Mary's Hospice thanked all those who attended the event to support the charity, and all those who gave their time to make the event a success.

Mrs Simpson said: "There was a really great atmosphere.

"The chutney challenge competitors were brilliant and Bob was a fantastic compere."
