THE fight to save a local Post Office has been taken all the way to Westminster when a South Cumbrian MP delivered a petition to parliament.

Three quarters of the population of Ulverston have voiced their support to ensure the Post Office in County Square stays open.

More than 8,000 signatures have been collected since January after Barrow and Furness MP John Woodcock started a campaign to save the vital town service.

Mr Woodcock said: “With almost 8,000 paper signatures and dozens more online, the response from our community to save the Ulverston post office has been amazing.

“I am grateful to everyone who has helped with our campaign, particularly Ulverstonian Malcolm Tyson who has walked around 500 miles while collecting hundreds of signatures.

“I will be a strong, independent Labour voice fighting for our community and am very proud to be submitting this petition to parliament today."

Grassroots campaigners have worked tirelessly to garner the support of townspeople.

Virtually every shop and business in town, from chemists to supermarkets have received a sign up sheet, which have been diligently collected, and collated by a group of volunteers.

This petition was the third most signed during this sitting of parliament.

In January the town was rocked by the news that their local branch would have to find a franchise partner, or face closure.

Post Office announced the potential closure in the latest round of cost-cutting measures being made by the company.

Ulverston was one of 37 offices around the country that were told to franchise or close.
