TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular South Cumbria farmer who made a fitting final journey by tractor.

Henry Watson, 72, died on April 30 after a well fought battle against oesophageal cancer.

Mr Watson lived and farmed at New Close Farm, Oxen Park. The H and JE Watson partnership, run with his younger brother John, are renowned for their award-winning herd of pedigree Ayrshire cattle.

Friends travelled from far and wide for Mr Watson's funeral service at Holy Trinty Church, Colton on Thursday. The church was full and many stood outside. The different groups represented included North West Ayrshire Breeders, South Lakes Tractor Run, Furness Supply, Rusland Show, F Barham’s and Ulverston Auction Mart.

Mr Watson was taken from his home to church by his David Brown 990 tractor. The farmer, known as H to his family and friends, had owned the tractor, from new, for 40 years. He had a life-long passion for tractors and was extremely knowledgeable about the vehicles and other machinery.

The tractor was driven by Mr Watson's nephew John Postlethwaite. A floral tribute of a David Brown tractor was made by the family.

The pallbearers were Mr Watson's nephews. He was laid to rest beside other family members in the churchyard.

Mr Watson is survived by his siblings Tony, John, Tom and Margaret, his cousins, his in-laws, nephews and nieces.

The Watson family paid tribute saying they will "greatly miss this lovely, gentle and wise man."

They said: "He was always working behind the scenes, he would never be up front but always there. He would help any family, friends and neighbours without having to be asked.

"He would help to set up for some local shows, especially Rusland Show. He would regularly be seen at a farm sale or attending agricultural shows."

At the end of last year Mr Watson had been delighted to read in the Evening Mail's Memories section about him winning a ploughing competition from 50 years ago. In the last few years he had enjoyed taking part in South Lakes Tractor Run charity events.
