A TEEN saxophonist sensation will feature in the broadcast of the semi-final of a prestigious contest this weekend.

Ulverston's Jess Gillam won the woodwind section of the prestigious BBC Young Musician 2016 and sailed into the semi-final of the acclaimed contest.

Her flawless category final set, included jazz fusion and Spanish and Japanese inspired music.

The semi-final, filmed from the Dora Stoutzker Hall, at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff, will be broadcast on BBC Four on Saturday from 7.30pm.

The five category winners were competing for three places in the grand final.

Now in its 38th year, BBC Young Musician is a part of the BBC’s ongoing commitment to supporting and providing a platform for new and emerging talent. Since its first outing in 1978 the competition has established an enviable reputation for finding outstanding new talent. Former winners include violinist Nicola Benedetti.

Jess reached the woodwind final in 2014 and was delighted to make it to the semi-final this year.

She is a junior student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, travelling there one day a week.

In September she will be a full-time student taking up her scholarship.

Her ambition is to have a career as a professional musician.
