BESPOKE everlasting flowers are set to help boost funds for the area's hospice thanks to the skills of a talented team of young apprentices.

The six students from Furness College created metalwork flowers before presenting them to St Mary's Hospice, in Ulverston.

They also made a handcrafted garden wood burner in the shape of a minion which will also help to generate much-needed income for the charity, based in Ford Park Crescent.

Stevie Footman, marketing coordinator for St Mary's, explained everyone had been impressed with the gifts.

"We're delighted that apprentices at Furness College have made some metal garden ornament flowers," she said.

"Working with their tutor; Scott Wilson, they have also made a garden wood burner in the style of a minion."

Ms Footman added: "We hope this can become a yearly project for apprentices as it's a nice opportunity for them to be creative and to visit the hospice to get an understanding of our services."

The team of level two engineering apprentices, which consisted of Ben Watson, Sophie Monk, Lee Harkin, Matthew Brown, Reece Mallon and Sam Johnson, visited St Mary's with Mr Wilson, pipework and fabrication curriculum lead, at Furness College last week.

While there, they were given a tour of the grounds and learned about the services provided by the hospice for people suffering from life-shortening illnesses across the area.

It is now hoped the project could be taken up by engineering apprentices as they study the level two qualification next year in a bid to form a strong link with the college as well as younger people in the community.

St Mary's Hospice receives just 22 per cent of its annual funding needs from the NHS.

The remainder of its yearly £2.8m running costs are met through fundraising, donations, bequests and with the help of an army of volunteers.

Around 15,000 have used services provided by the hospice over the last 25 years.
