IT was smiles all round as the "real stars" of Ulverston's Victoria High School received their hard-earned GCSE results.

Both staff and students were delighted with this year's efforts, with many students undeterred by the new changes made to the grading system of both their English and maths exams.

This year, the new 9-1 grading system is introduced in three GCSE subjects; maths, English language and English literature.

The new scale will be phased in to all other GCSEs over the next two years to replace the A*-G gradings.

Head boy and musician, Jacob Eggleston was thrilled with his results, achieving four A*s and six A grades.

The 16-year-old, who has just returned home from a European music tour, said he was "really happy" with his results.

"I didn't think I would do well; I think I felt a bit of detachment and was trying not to think about them," he added.

Jacob is now hoping to join the sixth form at UVHS to study music, maths and art.

His counterpart, head girl Meagan Roper, 16, also achieved a set of stellar results, scoring the equivalent of nine A*s and one A grade, including two nines and an eight.

She said: I've been really worried so it's a shock, but I put in a lot of hard work.

"I want to thank all the teachers, they've been so helpful."

Head of school Matthew Hardwick was keen to praise the determination of all pupils throughout their school careers, not just in their results.

He said: "Our pupils are more than the sum of their grades and so today we want to celebrate the individuals who have shone for all sorts of reasons.

"We are extremely proud of the overall outcomes for the year group as a whole and absolutely delighted many individual performances.

"Today’s results are a reflection of the immense dedication, commitment and sheer hard work that has been put in by both the students and staff of our fantastic school, as well as the phenomenal support of our parental body."

Friends Lexi Brockbank and Heather Ball, both 16, were also overwhelmed by their performances, scoring the equivalent of 18 A*s between them.

Mr Hardwick added: "It is also always important to remember that schools should not be ‘results factories’ and we have endeavoured to prepare each and every one of our students as much as possible for their future lives – again our students and staff have shown unbelievable levels of drive in providing/enjoying a huge range of extra-curricular provision.

"We wish them all the very best of luck in their chosen paths as they continue to create their own life stories."
