STRAW rockets, electrical experiments and outdoor adventures were just some of the highlights at a school's first ever 'Science Week'.

Pupils at Penny Bridge CE Academy in Greenodd have been learning all about the subject last Monday to Friday in special themed lessons.

The whole curriculum was taken over by science, with special visits from Siemens, GSK and BAE bringing all things STEM - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - to life.

The emphasis has been well and truly on getting practical, with group teaching of topics like friction and electricity.

Jane Thedham, science coordinator at Penny Bridge Academy, said the week had been a big success, with the children showing lots of enthusiasm.

She said: "We had a range of parents come in with scientific experience to talk and Siemens have been brilliant.

"We've got electrical experiments on Thursday and straw rockets with BAE on Friday.

"It's probably the first time we have done a whole week focused on science activities.

"We always do creative themed weeks like this."

In Thursday's morning activity, youngsters took to the outdoors and learned about how plants make their own food with photosynthesis and analysed annual growth rings in tree trunks.

The STEM ambassadors from Siemens, GSK and BAE were sourced for the school by STEM Cumbria Ltd's ambassador programme.

Other visitors to talk to pupils included a dental hygienist and a physicist.
