A SCIENTIST has scooped a prestigious award for his inspirational work with young people, following in the footsteps of astronaut Tim Peake.

Dr Michael Jeschke, a materials expert at Siemens in Ulverston, set up a science club at Ulverston Victoria High School earlier this year in the hopes of encouraging students to become more involved in the STEM subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Dr Jeschke was presented with the award for Outstanding STEM ambassador at the STEM Inspiration awards held earlier this month at the House of Lords, in London celebrating his efforts in the field.

Previous STEM ambassadors include famous astronaut Tim Peake, who became the first honorary ambassador.

South Cumbria was well represented at the awards, with staff from BAE in attendance to pick up their award for best group project.

The awards aim to recognise the country's most dedicated professionals in the STEM field.

Winners will be taken on an visit to CERN, the world-renowned research facility in Switzerland. They will also attend the International STEM Inspiration awards which will take place in Geneva in January.
