TWO siblings from Barrow who wrestled with a doorman on a drunken night out in Ulverston have received community service orders.

Sam Pickering and Natalie Scholes appeared before Furness Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with the assault of a doorman at an Ulverston club.

The pair, from Barrow, were on a night out at The Basement Bar, in Ulverston, in March when a fracas broke out on the dance floor.

Mr Andy Travis, prosecuting, said: "Declan Burrows was working at the bar downstairs and saw two lads who were about to fight.

"He went over and told them that they would have to leave."

The court then heard how the bouncer tried to evict both Pickering and his sister Scholes but received a number of blows from both defendants during the incident.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to assault but Pickering revealed that he did not remember much about the evening.

Mr Travis said: "Mr Pickering said he couldn't recall anything of the night, why he was arrested or the injuries he sustained.

"He admitted the assault after seeing CCTV. He admitted punching Mr Burrows because he saw him pushing his sister out of the club."

Mr Michael Graham, defending, explained how the siblings tried to protect each other as they were escorted off the premises after an altercation occurred on the dance floor.

He said both the defendants had no previous convictions but were under the influence of alcohol.

Addressing the court he said: "Miss Scholes hasn't been out since the incident and has little or no alcohol now.

"She is sorry and would like the opportunity to say sorry to Mr Burrows personally.

"Mr Pickering is also a person of good character with no other convictions."

Scholes was ordered to complete 60 hours of unpaid work while Mr Pickering received 100 hours of unpaid work.

Both were fined a total of £245 each.
