TWO festivals celebrating all things vintage combined into one this weekend to take visitors back in time in Ulverston.

The Á L’ancienne Vintage Cycling Festival, which made its debut last year, have joined forces with Vintage Village Hall to stage Ulverston’s newest festival – Retro Rendevous.

Cycling festival organiser Alan Brenton said: “We always wanted to try and turn it into a bigger festival so I got in touch with Rachel Martin, who runs the Vintage Village Hall, and it was something she had been thinking about as well.”

Together with David Wood and Sophie Bennett, the team have pulled together Retro Rendezvous.

The festival coincides with Furness Tradition but the team feel that both events will complement each other nicely.

Retro Rendezvous will begin on Friday night at the Coronation Hall with the Ulverston Victoria High School Big Band performing their summer concert.

There will be also be a performance by Beatles cover band, Dig a Pony at the Big Kings and the Furness Tradition opening will be at the Red Rose Club.

Mr Brenton said: “I am really looking forward to the festival, it’s taken a lot of organisation and as I am used to running the cycling events this has been very different, there’s been so many different things to pull together.

“It’s very much a family day out and with Furness Tradition also running it should be a great weekend.”

Mrs Martin has been running the pop-up Vintage Village Hall since 2011 and also got involved in last year’s Á L’ancienne Vintage Cycling Festival.

She said: “We provided afternoon tea for the cyclists on the side of Coniston Water. Instead of throwing energy drinks and bottles of water at them they would stop for afternoon tea with china – it was hilarious.

“People absolutely loved it. It seemed like organising a festival was the natural thing to do next.”

A range of events will be held over the weekend including vintage fairs with retro stalls, tea rooms held at the Laurel and Hardy Museum, classic car displays, a vintage pram parade and a showing of Breakfast at Tiffany’s at The Roxy Cinema – which is described by Mrs Martin as a “full dress-up affair, complete with cocktails”.

She said: “Vintage can be seen as very girly sometimes so this event will hopefully attract more men as there is so much on for everybody.

“There will be vintage cars and motorbikes on display as well. This event has given us more room to expand what we want to do.”

The event is sponsored by Ulverston Town Council, South Lakeland District Council and the Mysterious Ulverston Curry Club. The majority of events held over the weekend are free.

The two that require an entry fee are the Breakfast at Tiffany’s at The Roxy Cinema and The Gerry Colvin Band and Dave Gibb performace at the Laurel and Hardy Museum on Saturday.
