THE ROYAL British Legion is to hold a remembrance parade in Ulverston to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

The battle that began 100 years ago today saw 19,240 British soldiers die on the first day alone.

Lasting from July to November 1916, the battle was one of the bloodiest of the war.

Ulverston has close ties to the battle as it is twinned with the town of Albert, France, where the British lost over 60,000 men during the first few weeks of the battle.

The parade will assemble at 10.30am tomorrow, Saturday 2 July in Brogden Street, behind Coronation Hall.

At 10.40 the parade will march to the war memorial in the town centre.

The Royal British Legion invites members of the public to join the parade alongside members of the armed forces to pay their respects.

Members of the army, navy and RAF will be present during the march.

There will be a short service of remembrance at the war memorial after which the national anthem will be sung before the parade returns to Coronation Hall at 11.10am.
