TWO sections of the A590 are set to be affected by roadworks causing potentially long delays for motorists during the school summer holiday period.

From August 8, a new surface will be laid on a busy section of the road between the Red Syke Railway Bridge just outside Ulverston and Park Road in Swarthmoor.

The roadworks will take place between 7pm and 6am, during which a 40 mph speed limit will be implemented.

During certain hours a convoy will have to guide drivers through the work using a 10 mph speed limit.

Some side roads will always be closed during the five-week period and diversions will be put in place for motorists.

Project Manager, Peter Gee, said: “The carriageway is in need of resurfacing to address cracks and potholes. Drivers will benefit from smoother journeys as a result. We have designed a tight programme to get the work finished with minimum disruption.”

Motorists going through the Lindal dip will also face travel disruption as roadworks will get underway to improve the drainage system in the case of a flood.

The second phase of repairs was set to take place today, however Highways England have decided to postpone the work due to the number of events going on around the area such as the highly popular Kendal Calling musical festival.

The work will now start a week from today and will be completed by 17 August.

During that period, 24-hour traffic signals will be in place over the two weekends that the work covers.
