HAPPY riders were in the ribbons at a South Cumbria equine club's busiest show of the year.

Pristine ponies were on show at Ulverston and District Equine Club's Sash Day on Sunday.

Jockeys turned out on force to compete in ridden and in hand showing, working hunter and show jumping classes with their horses and ponies at Newland Farm, Newland.

Each of the 60 plus classes had been kindly sponsored by business and individual families who got behind the club. Members winning the classes received lovely sashes, while those in the placings also received rosettes, all featuring the sponsor's details.

The most emotional win of the day was for Sara Tyson, of Dalton, when she partnered Roxy to a win in the 14 to 15hh working hunter class.

Mrs Tyson's sash prize was presented in loving memory of her late uncle, Derek Ellison, who passed away in March aged 65. Mr Ellison was a past chairman of the club. The class winner said she was "honoured".

During the break, the fun class was the much-anticipated Parents of Ponies event, which attracted the most spectators of the day.

Young members Eve Bagley and Erin McKinley also ran a successful charity cake stall in the break, raising more than £55 to support the World Horse Welfare charity.

The club received the support from a field of top judges. Casting their expert eyes over the showing competition were; Ria Holmes, of Nottingham, Vivien Shepley, of Chorley, Susan Stockley Bridges of St Helens and the Supreme of Show judge was Jayne Pimbley Cartmell, of Lancashire.

In the supreme championship it was Welsh wonders who stole the show. Mollie Mae Jeffrey, of Ulverston, and Kerrishill Apollo were Supreme of Show winners, and the Reserve of Supreme went to Sophie Barker, of Cartmel, with Rayid Morning Glory. Both are beautiful Welsh Section C ponies.

Chairlady of Ulverston and District Equine Club, Avril McKinley, said: "A massive thank you to everyone who supported our sash day. To all the businesses and families who sponsored the lovely sashes and rosettes, the top judges who travelled to be with us and all the competitors."
