A REVAMPED play park is proving to be a hit with youngsters – and some big kids.

The play area at North Scale Community Centre was shut in December for refurbishment and this week it was reopened with new equipment to the delight of toddlers, children and their grown ups.

Little ones from the Walney centre's mother and toddler group, and other children from the community were the first to have a go on the new play equipment on Wednesday morning.

North Scale Residents' Association has self funded the £7,500 project to bring the play area up-to-date.

The new Playdale equipment includes a gravity rider, a balance beam, swings, climbing nets and ramp.

The site in North Scale village also has a new chipping,  drainage system and bins.

Des Barlow, treasurer on North Scale Residents' Association management committee, said: "The play area needed revamping and the equipment needed replacing. Now after the all the work it looks great."

Mr Barlow said he hopes the youngsters in the community enjoy the park and take care of it.

On this special occasion Mr Barlow, also a councillor for North Walney, and Walney PCSO Phil Sullivan posed for a photo on the swings, but usually these swings are just for children up to 14. The cradle swings are for children up to three years.

Resident Helen Corris, 57, was at the reopening event with her 22-month-old grandson, Harry White.

Mrs Corris said: "It's really good, the kids love it. It is a lot better than before."

Mr Barlow's four-year-old granddaughter Sophia Barlow,  said: "I like the swings the best. It's really good."

The park also has grassed areas and picnic benches for families.

The community pay back team has also created a concrete entrance area and tidied up the play park and outside the community centre. Mr Barlow has thanked that team, local residents who help maintain the grass cutting and also Playdale, Hydro Jets, Eclipse and Lakes Biomass.

The play area is open from 9am-9pm to September, and in the winter from 9am until dark.

North Scales' mother and toddler group runs on Wednesday's from 9.30am- 11.30am.
