A TEAM of daredevils have set a new North West regional record for the amount of people skydiving in formation – and plans are already being made to break that record next year.

A total of 26 people leapt from two planes, 15,000ft above Flookburgh, in a stunt organised by Skydive Northwest, based at the Northwest Parachute Centre, Cark.

This photo, which gives a view of Morecambe Bay not many people get to see, appears in the new issue of Bay Living magazine, which is out this week. The shot was taken by photographer Peter Hughes from Kirkby, who has been capturing jumps on film for many years and has completed more than 3,000 skydives himself.

He said: “The team is made up of regular jumpers who are a mix of locals and people from all over the UK. There’s a lot of groundwork that goes into it, you have to rehearse.

“The jump had been planned for a year with loads of practice building up to it, and people had to prove themselves before they could be a part of it.”

The record-breaking rules say the number of people jumping out of the aircraft must match the number of people making up the formation for the record to stand. The team are already planning their next challenge of 30 people jumping in formation – the maximum that the club’s two aircraft can carry – in May next year.

This issue of Bay Living, which is on sale from Thursday, includes a picture special from the inaugural Bay Living Awards, celebrating some of the businesses, organisations and individuals which make this area great.

There’s also an interview with local lad Wayne Hemingway, founder of the famed Red or Dead brand, plus an update on the Love Barrow high street campaign and the latest on the National Trust’s Fell Foot project, which has received a massive cash windfall.
