A POPULAR Ulverston teacher was humbled and honoured to receive his MBE today.

Richard Butler, an assistant head and the head of performing arts at Ulverston Victoria High School, was presented with his award by Prince William at Buckingham Palace.

Mr Butler, who featured in New Year's Honours list for his contribution to music education, has dedicated his award to his "amazing" students and school community.

The married father-of-three always says he is a "very lucky person" having the opportunity to work with such "fantastic students".

His UVHS performing arts department is held in the highest esteem, the school bands are internationally- acclaimed and UVHS has a unique partnership with The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. Former students taught by Mr Butler have gone on to be professional musicians.

The UVHS teacher of more than 20 years, said: "I feel very good. It has been very humbling. There were some wonderful people receiving awards.

"This award is not for me. It is in recognition of all the hard work of my amazing students and the staff, management and parents at school who support the performing arts and allow me to do what I do.

"Sadly the arts are being cut in some schools, but we are flourishing at UVHS and that is down to the school family. We have wonderful recognition for the performing arts at UVHS."

The Duke of Cambridge had a good chat with Mr Butler. The prince told the music teacher that the orchestra play music by The Verve at ceremonies he is involved with as they are one of his favourites.

Mr Butler, 47, said: "Prince William was lovely. He said 'You're the performing arts man'. He told me how much he enjoys the performing arts and we spoke about school. He knew all about our work with the Royal Marines band.

"It was a very special morning. It was overwhelming to be at the palace."

Ever championing the talents of his students, Mr Butler was also delighted to chat with with John Tiffany, director of the hit play, Harry Potter And The Cursed Child. Mr Tiffany was receiving an OBE.

Mr Butler attended the ceremony with his 17-year-old daughter, Tabi Butler, and his parents.

Tabi said: "I'm very proud of dad. He does tons.
"It was cool to be at the palace. The string orchestra, the Countess of Wessex's String Orchestra, were brilliant."
