A DEMAND is being made to prioritise the setting up of a blanket 20mph speed limit in Ulverston, after talks with traffic officials stalled.

Ulverston Town Council has expressed its regret at the "inordinate delay" in negotations with Cumbria County Council over their proposal to reduce the speed limit in the town.

Members passed a motion calling on the procedure to be hurried up at Monday night's town council meeting, while acknowledging that focus had shifted to flood recovery and road repairs following Storm Desmond.

Councillor Colin Pickthall said: "We agreed and set the process running last year to examine and go through all the difficulties and practice of setting up a 20mph speed limit in Ulverston.

"The first stage of this was a meeting with the relevant officer of the county. It never happened. It was delayed for whatever reason.

"We had the floods at the back end of last year and that understandably stopped all those people doing this work.

"But it's the better part of a year that we started this process and absolutely nothing has happened.

"We need to crack on with this as soon as we can."

Ulverston Town Council set up a task and working group in summer 2015 to look at areas where the 20mph could be imposed such as schools and housing estates.

Cllr Norman Bishop-Rowe said: "We needed guidance from county - that has not taken place."

It is hoped a public consultation will be held over the plans before any decision is made.

Members of Ulverston Town Council voted unanimously to support the agenda item on Monday, which will see the town clerk now press to reopen proceedings with Cumbria County Council.
