MAY was Kiss Goodbye to MS month, as people were encouraged to give up something they enjoy to help raise funds for vital research to help beat the condition. One special young woman, Philippa Fox, really played her part and friend Vicki Simpson was so impressed with her efforts that she nominated her for the Evening Mail's Bouquet of the Week, as SUSAN GOODSON reports

IT can be hard enough to give up one special treat, but for Philippa Fox took this commitment to the next level.

Throughout May, she banished all snacks, including chocolate and crisps, from her Swarthmoor home.

And then, just to make it a May to remember, she also went make-up free for the whole month, despite admitting that she usually wears it every day.

Friend Vicki Simpson, of Ulverston, nominated her for the bouquet, and said: "On May 1, Philippa opted to give up all snacks, chocolate and make-up for a whole month to raise money for a charity close to her and her family's hearts, the MS Society.

"She has completed her mission and raised a good amount of money and I really believe her willpower and lack of make-up for a whole month deserve her the bouquet of the week.

"She was absolutely dedicated and I know how much she loves a cup of tea with a biscuit, plus she walks three dogs each day and all that walking works up an appetite.

"She has amazing skin and looks great without make-up but I know not even being able to put on mascara was hard, but each time someone donated money to her JustGiving page she was given a real boost."

The 30-year-old knew about the bouquet nomination, because Vicki knew she doesn't like surprises.

Philippa said: "The 'no snacks' was the hardest part, especially crisps, more than the make-up. In fact, it has changed me because I don't think I will wear make-up all the time now, at least not always at work.

"I did a bare face selfie each day on Snapchat just to show people I wasn't wearing any.

"I had two birthday parties in May and there was cake at work which I didn't have any of.

"I just had sandwiches and quiche and lost nine pounds, but this morning (June 1) I did have cake for breakfast. A friend makes the best birthday cake so I had put some in the freezer and made sure I got it out last night so I could have it first thing this morning.

"But after a while of not snacking I had loads more energy.

"It did seem weird getting ready to go out though and not put on make-up. It didn't feel as though I had really 'got ready'.

"I love my job at Supported Living and I do do sleepovers as part of it. For me, at night, not being able to sit down and have a biscuit was hard because that is sort of 'my time'."

Philippa was hoping to raise £100, but in the end has given £280 to the MS Society, which she is extremely pleased with.
