A NEW fitness initiative aimed at the older generations is being rolled out in leisure centres across Cumbria.

Aimed at men and women over the age of 50, Walking Rugby sessions are being held at seven centres across the county with south Cumbrians able to take on the sport at Ulverston Leisure Centre in Priory Road.

Richard Foster, regional community, sport and health manager for Greenwich Leisure Limited, was involved in the original funding submission and is working with local partners in the implementation of the scheme.

He said: "Although only walking is permitted, participants will reap the rewards when it comes to health benefits.

"The nature of the sessions means that you are always on the move, walking at a brisk pace and dodging and weaving around opponents. Participants will work up quite a sweat during the 45-minute sessions.

"It’s also a great opportunity for socialising and meeting new people and we will be encouraging participants to stay around afterwards to have a cup of tea or coffee in centres with catering facilities."

The 45-minute Sessions began in Ulverston on January 16 and are held every Monday and Tuesday from 11:15am and 6pm respectively.

It costs £1.50 to sign up for each session with the last one at Ulverston Leisure Centre pencilled in for Tuesday March 21.
