A MULTI-MILLION masterplan which could bring state of the art leisure facilities to Ulverston is being recommended within an ambitious new report.

The document, unveiled today, states the town's current leisure centre in Priory Road could make way for a £13 million replacement to better meet the future needs of the area.

South Lakeland District Council bosses are set to decide whether to pursue the move at a meeting on Wednesday next week.

If given the go ahead, the site could be re-modelled within the next few years to host a mix of facilities including a gym, studio space, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, outdoor and artificial surface pitches, a bowling green and a larger, six lane 25 metre pool.

There could also be new changing facilities and a reception area.

The report, by planning experts FMG Consulting, states the site also has the potential to be self-sustaining - meaning it would not require any subsidy to operate on a day to day basis.

If councillors agree to move to the next phase of the scheme, a public consultation will be launched as well as more detailed investigations into planning and how finance could be secured for the build itself.

The council and North Country Leisure, which runs Ulverston Leisure Centre on behalf of SLDC, are working together on the masterplan, which has also been informed by GSK’s (GlaxoSmithKline’s) need to relocate its sports centre as part of possible future redevelopment plans of its site on North Lonsdale Road, Ulverston.
