MOTORISTS have complained at an apparent lack of work taking place on sections of roadworks on the A590 which have caused significant tailbacks.

The main route linking Barrow and Furness to the M6 motorway and rest of England is hampered by a number of roadwork projects, including resurfacing at the three bridges between Barrow and Ulverston and further work at Newlands just east of Ulverston.

A number of motorists have contacted the Evening Mail about an apparent lack of work being carried out by workmen at Newlands, which last night caused significant delays.

Maurice Cowperthwaite said: "Absolute outrage, these people just treat us, the ones who pay their wages, with utter contempt. I came into Ulverston from Greenodd, had a look at the "road works" at Newlands, nothing happening, nothing to see, no workmen anywhere to be seen."

Simon posted on THIS ARTICLE last night: Took half an hour to do about two miles this evening before I took to the back lanes. My wife told me about the traffic lights at Newlands - and the usual chaos once the queue reaches the roundabout in Ulverston.

"I've complained to Traffic England but I don't expect to get anything other than the usual fob off. Time and time again we see queues caused not by the road works themselves, but by "inconsiderate" use of traffic lights.

"Time and time again the Highways Agency, or Highways England, or Traffic England (whatever they're called this week) say there's nothing they can do. Time and time again people setup traffic lights without operating them sensibly, and time and time again they suffer absolutely no penalty at all - it seems the worse that ever happens is they'll be told "don't do it again or we'll tell you not to do it again".

"If done properly, it is possible to have traffic lights without causing 8 mile tailbacks - even on the A590. All we need is a few prosecutions for obstructing the highway (or whatever they can make stick) and the contractors would do it right. As long as there's no penalty they'll do whatever is cheapest for them."
