A CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED author is on tour after writing a novel based on the life of one of the UK's most beloved comics.

Irish writer John Connolly will this weekend visit Ulverston to promote his latest publication 'He'.

Based on the life of Ulverston-born comic Stan Laurel, it charts his life in the golden age of Hollywood.

In the novel Mr Connolly has re-imagined what happened to one half of the iconic comedy duo during his retirement.

The book sees Laurel reminiscing on his early life in vaudeville, and as an understudy to Charlie Chaplin.

The book has been described as: "An intensely compassionate study of the tension between commercial demands and artistic integrity, the human frailties behind even the greatest of artists, and one of the most enduring and beloved partnerships in cinema history."
