THE Ulverston Business Improvement District has put the call out for volunteers to join them in spending the thousands of pounds it receives from local businesses.

Two years ago the BID was formed to promote and enhance Ulverston. It brought together local leaders in the town to ensure Ulverston was a vibrant and attractive local for tourists and businesses.

Next week an election will be held to fill vacancies on the BID's board. Five new members will be chosen to join the organisation.

Each year the BID collects a levy from local businesses totalling roughly £100,000. Whoever steps into the voluntary role on the BID will have a say on how that money is spend.

Chairman of the BID, Chris Nelson, said: "The constitution of the BID states that one third of the board must be re- elected or change after two years as a way of refreshing the board and giving new people a chance to join.

"The board has done a fantastic job and worked diligently to ensure that the money raised from local businesses is spent wisely but we don’t have a monopoly on good ideas. "The BID board needs people who are prepared to work for the benefit of Ulverston and work with groups and organisations to make things happen."

The vote will take place on Thursday October 19 at the Coronation Hall. Members of the public are allowed to attend the meeting but only those who pay the BID levy will be eligible to vote.

The meeting will also report back on how Ulverston BID has been spending the money it collects from businesses in the town each year. Members of the BID will also answer questions on how they have been running the organisation.

More than 450 business pay into the BID which is made up of representatives from five business sectors: large business, small business, retail, hospitality and charities, and schools.

Mr Nelson concluded: "The public meeting on October is Ulverston’s chance to question the board directly, and give us new ideas about making Ulverston better."

If you would like to stand for the BID nominations containing the nominee’s name, business address and contact telephone or email must be received by October 16 emailed to the BID chair at chris@trafalgar-pr.co.uk or admin@ulverstonbid.org.uk.

Nominations cal also be made by calling 07761930627.

The meeting at the Coronation Hall will begin at at 6.30pm for a presentation by the Environment Agency, followed by the BID meeting at 7pm.
