A RESTAURANT owner proved age was no barrier when you're having fun as he hosted the first Scalextric night in Ulverston.

After the owner of Virginia House in Queen Street, Craig Sherrington, turned 40, he asked for vouchers to help him achieve one his childhood dreams – owning his own Scalextric kit.

When brainstorming what kind of special events the restaurant could host in 2017, Mr Sherrington took a gamble and proposed he host a hobby night for people like him to come and share their love of the racing game.

He said: "I always liked Scalextric when I was a child but I never had one. I turned 40 last year and we I thought it would be a good idea for my birthday if everyone bought me a voucher to get some Scalextric - so, they did, and it was awesome."

"We have a business at Virginia House and we were looking through the planned events for the year; I happened to mention that I liked Scalextric, and they all laughed at me."

Undeterred, Mr Sherrington posted his idea on social media and was delighted to find there was interest in Ulverston for his idea.

On Monday, his plan came to fruition as 10 guests came to play with Mr Sherrington's set, as well as a vintage 1960s track and cars brought by another keen hobbyist.

Mr Sherrington said: "It was great fun; we all sat there and had a good craic on. It's a bit of nostalgia having something that isn't on a screen. There is the joy of putting the track together; it was really good fun."

After the success of the first event, Mr Sherrington will continue the club on the second Monday of every month, between 7-9pm.
