ONE of the biggest lanterns that will be paraded in a town's annual festival is being made by school children.

Pupils from Church Walk in Ulverston have made a giant rocking horse for the Ulverston Lantern Festival tonight.

The event has a theme of ‘Out of the Toybox’ and some of the pieces that will be paraded around the town will include a penguin, lego block, teddy bear and a jack-in-a-box.

Each class at Church Walk has been involved in making the giant rocking horse.

Headteacher, Susan Davies, said: "Last year we were involved in the lantern festival and the children made their own individual lanterns but this year we decided to do one big one to represent the school."

The idea for making a rocking horse came from the school's history.

Mrs Davies said: "Our logo when we were an infant school was a rocking horse and we have an old traditional rocking horse in the school so we tried to base our lantern on that."

The children, accompanied by the teachers, started work on their rocking horse lantern before the summer holidays.

Due to its size it has had to be laid down on the floor so the children can reach to cover it in tissue paper.

Mrs Davies said: "It's looking good and really big. It's going to take at least four people to carry it.

"We are all going to meet outside the Parish Church and we have invited all the children and their parents to walk round with us."
