AN Ulverston building which has stood proud for more than 100 years in a south Cumbria town is set for a five-figure restoration.

Since it was opened in 1914, the Coronation Hall has for generations been a linchpin in the community.

Now Ulverston Community Enterprises, which runs the hall and the town’s markets, is choosing to invest to secure the building's legacy for decades to come.

Over the next seven months more than £50,000 will be spent on refurbishing the interior and exterior of the hall.

The work has been made possible thanks to donations from community groups and generous benefactors.

The Friends of the Coronation Hall have put forward £10,000, with additional support coming from the Town Lands Trust and the Fisher Foundation, as well as a sizeable private donation.

At the end of July scaffolding will be erected to the front and the A590-facing side of the building to allow paint crews to start their work.

The hall will be open as normal as work begins to refresh the exterior of the hall in a pale sandstone colour.

Chairwoman of UCE, Judy Pickthall, explained: "We are really looking forward to the hall being spruced up on the outside, and we are sure everyone will be suitably impressed when the scaffolding comes down at the end of August.

"In the meantime, we will maintain business as usual during August for the private bookings by companies and individuals, and for the community groups who are the main users of the hall during that month."

The painting work is the first of the hall's two-step renovation. UCE is hopeful that a redecoration of the foyer and staircases will begin in early January, the quietest month for the hall.

Charlie Rowley, CEO of UCE, said the refurbishment would be a perfect way to kick off a new season of entertainment in the new year.

He said: "Ulverston is tremendously fortunate in having such a beautiful building right in the heart of the town and the facelift for the frontage will act as perfect curtain-raiser to the exciting autumn and winter season of events."
