THE rain did not put off some 300 senior and junior runners from competing in a 30th anniversary Ulverston race.

Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers celebrated 30 years of their club with a strong turn out for its annual 10k race and 1k junior fun run.

One of the club's founding members, John Bettinson, an Olympic cyclist at Mexico 1968, was the race starter and he presented the medals.

Mr Bettinson, of Ulverston, said he was proud to have been asked to celebrate the anniversary event.

The first man back was Marc Brown of Whitehaven in 31.45, second was Mark Walsh of Maryport and third was David Fulford, of Haverigg and running for Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers.

Barrow Amateur Boxing Club were among those using the event as a fundraiser. The boxing club was raising money for Jo's Appeal, in memory of popular Evening Mail reporter Jo Davies.

Barrow ABC had 10k runners and juniors in the fun run. Among the juniors were Olivia Grace Butterfield, seven, Lily-Rose Gardner, eight and Joshua Gardner, 14.

Olivia Grace said: "My trainers got really wet, but I enjoyed running."

Lily-Rose said: "It was quite tiring and it was raining, but it was still fun."

Joshua said: "It was a really good event."

Race director Louise Thompson, of Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers said: "We have had a very good turnout for the 30th anniversary race. Everyone gets a medal and keyring."
