A POST office service left without internet for two months is celebrating after finally being brought back online.

For six years, Great Urswick has been served by a travelling post office after its own closed down.

Every Wednesday and Friday the service, run from the Millom post office, was set up in the village church's parish room.

Residents could pay their bills, draw their pensions or just catch up with friends for a chat and a cup of tea.

However, this was threatened after the internet connection was cut to the parish room for no apparent reason.

Maggie Turbitt, one of the post office's customers and the village church warden, said: "We live in a small, rural village and we have a small village post office that is supplied from Millom.

"Seven weeks ago we ran into a problem with BT Openreach. They cut the service, for no apparent reason.

"We were concerned about the community. Everyone needs a post office, it gets people together."

As the travelling post office depends on the internet, the loss meant that even the most simple of tasks could not be completed.

Mrs Turbitt said: "People who have been coming to the post office couldn't really use the services as it was a bit haphazard.

"There would be no collection of pensions, paying of bills or sending of parcels. If we don't have internet we have nothing."

Since the village lost it's own post office, no-one was willing to step in and take over the business.

The travelling post office not only provides the village with a range of important services, but also serves as a place for people to meet and catch up.

With a large elderly population in Great Urswick, the post office also gives people the chance to check up on their neighbours.

Church warden Sonjie Marshall said: "We have coffee after the post office has been. People can get together and have a chat. We find out if anyone needs help.

"We're trying to make this a friendly community, we look out for each other."

After seven weeks of frustration dealing with the internet provider, a new line has been put in and the parish room is finally back online.

Mrs Marshall said villagers are keen to stress the post office is open for business again. She said: "Please come and support us. We also want to thank Lorraine Birchall, she's been a big help."

At the first session of the reopened post office, residents of the village celebrated with tea, coffee and biscuits during a much-needed catch-up.

The post office in Great Urswick will be open at the Urswick parish room on Wednesdays from 12.30pm to 4pm, and Fridays from 9.30am to noon.
