THE family of young a Ulverston man left fighting for his life after a horrific car crash said they are struggling to come to terms with the extent of his injuries.

A police investigation is under way after 25-year-old Liam McKenna was hit by a car in Victoria Road, Ulverston, late on Saturday night (17).

Mr McKenna's sister, Michelle John, said in recent days he had undergone surgery at the Royal Preston Hospital but his condition remained very serious.

She said: "Liam is in a coma due to a bleed on his brain. He's also had surgery for a broken femur and pelvis.

"We keep being told how wonderful they are at Preston. It's reassuring."

Mrs Johns said Mr McKenna remained under the close eye of the trauma team at Preston as they work to ensure he can be safely brought out of his coma.

A police appeal remains in place to trace anyone who may have information regarding the collision.

Mr McKenna was hit by a car in Victoria Road, on Saturday February 17, around 10.40pm.

Following the collision the driver of red Audi A3 involved in the incident was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving while over the specified drug limit.

He has since been released under investigation as police continue their inquiries.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a heavy police presence in the area in the hours following the collision. One said the junction of Victoria Road and Kings Road was kept under floodlights until 2.40am on Sunday.

Mrs John said she hoped by speaking out on behalf of her brother any witnesses to the collision would come forward and tell the police what they know.
