EXCITED youngsters are getting all set for an agricultural show which is heading to their village this month.

Pupils at Low Furness CE Primary School, in Urswick, are busy preparing their entries for the Ulverston and North Lonsdale Agricultural Show, which takes place on Wednesday July 27.

The North-West Evening Mail-sponsored event is on a new showfield this year, moving across the road to Longrigg Farm, by kind permission of the Stable family.

As a gesture to its neighbouring school, all the pupils receive a free ticket for the show.

The majority of the pupils enter the various children's competitions, and some are also involved in showing pets, sheep, cattle and horses with their families on the day.

The school is hoping to retain the children's trophy with their various artistic entries.

Low Furness headteacher, Sue Little, said; "We see our school as a big part of the community and it is a real pleasure for our children to be part of the show which is on our doorstep. The show very kindly provides us with tickets."

One of the attractions at this year's show is Tom Longton’s Working Sheepdogs which will include demonstrations and audience participation.

The calf handling has been moved to the main ring this year as requested by visitors. Also in the main ring are the heavy horses, race horse to riding horses and the carriage driving sections.

A new attraction this year is the cone driving where horses and their vehicles will be racing around cones against the clock. Four shows are taking part in this new venture, Ulverston and North Lonsdale Show, Cartmel Show, Lunesdale Show and Westmorland County Show which will stage the grand final in September.

Around the Ulverston and North Lonsdale showground there will be the usual cattle, sheep, horse, rabbit and poultry classes, as well as horiticultural and children’s classes.

Dogs will also have their day in Alice’s Dog Show, organised by Simon and Cathy Broomfield of Verstone Kennels, Mascalles, for the Alice's Escapes charity. Owners and dogs enter on the day at the dog area.

There is also a pet area with Little Beasties, of Ulverston, and a Kids Zone for the youngsters to enjoy.

The Food Hall returns with cookery demonstrations and food stalls. The rural craft marquee will also be there and a range of trade stands.

Barrow Vintage Motorcycle Club will also be displaying vehicles.

The show also has complimentary buses from Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston.

Show secretary Margaret Coward, who retires after this year's event following 10 years in the role, said: "The show is a great family day out with lots to see. Folk from the area always support us."
