A CALLOUS criminal is being hunted by police after an elderly Ulverston man was targeted by a distraction burglary.

On the morning of Thursday March 15 a suspect knocked on the door of the victim's house, in Dale Street. A conversation was struck up by the suspect who claimed he was a tradesman.

He was invited inside by the victim to speak about internal repair work, but, after the victim's suspicions were raised the criminal was asked to leave. Soon after, it was discovered the homeowner's wallet had been stolen.

Detective sergeant Mike Wallace, of Barrow CID, said: "Often these criminals target the elderly and most vulnerable in our societies, and I’d ask that friends and family educate their relatives to make them more vigilant.

"This does not appear to be part of any wider crime series but I’d advise local residents to be more diligent and not allow anyone without prior appointment and identification into their homes."

A police appeal has gone out for any information which could held lead to the arrest of the burglar.

The suspect was last seen in the Ulverston area around 10.15am on Thursday (15). He is described as a white male, 30 to 40 years old, over 6ft tall, of stocky build, with broad facial features. He was wearing a boiler suit.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and ask to speak to Barrow CID, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800555111.
