A BARROW driver who caused a four-car collision on a busy South Lakes road appeared in court yesterday accused of motoring offences.

Anthony Johnson, of Bay View Grove, Barrow, was accused of driving without due care and attention on the A590 on August 11.

The 56-year-old, who works as a driver for Dominos Pizza, collided with the back of another car close to the Rusland Pool Hotel, near Greenodd, after not realising it was indicating to turn.

Mr Peter Bardsley, prosecuting said: "Someone was indicating to turn right to go into the Rusland Pool Hotel. When she did so there was a collision where her vehicle was pushed into the back of another. There were four cars involved.

"The crown say there was a lack of driver care and attention. Mr Johnson did not see her vehicle ahead of him."

When he was interviewed Johnson accepted the blame for the collision, saying his reactions were not quick enough when he realised the hazard.

Johnson pleaded guilty to the offence, and represented himself in court.

He said: "I didn't see the indicator. I didn't know if they were turning or not. By the time I realised it was too late."

The court heard that Johnson was driving at 50mph at the point of impact and no serious injuries resulted from the crash.

He continued: "I'm very sorry it happened. I'm so used to driving up and down that road, I've been doing it for 10 years. It's just out of character."

For his role in the collision, Johnson's driving licence was endorsed with six penalty points.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a fine of £200. He was also ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £30.
