THERE was waggy tailed fun and a great family atmosphere at a charity dog show in Ulverston.

Alice's Dog Show was once again a popular feature at this summer's Ulverston and North Lonsdale Show, in Urswick.

The event for canines of all shapes and sizes is now in its sixth year and it is held in honour of the late and inspirational Ulverston teenager, Alice Pyne, who passed away in 2013 after a five-year battle with cancer.

The dog show was originally founded in 2011 as part of Alice's Bucket List, as Alice wanted to enter her labrador Mabel in a dog show. Simon and Cathy Broomfield, of Verstone Kennels and Cattery, planned the inaugural gathering on a neighbouring farmer’s field and it was an overwhelming success, which had Alice smiling from start to finish.

The dog show is now an annual fixture on Ulverston and North Lonsdale Show's calendar. It is still organised by the Broomfields, in conjunction with the agricultural show, and is sponsored by WCF Country Centres and Verstone Kennels and Cattery.

This year the show was judged this year by local Kennel Club accredited judge Steph Whitaker. Classes were held for pedigree dogs – including a special Labrador class - and also fun classes such as the waggiest tail, and best six legs for child handlers.

Mrs Broomfield said: "More than 70 dogs entered this year's show and there was a lovely family fun atmosphere.

"Best in Show was awarded to Elise the Alaskan Malamute, Reserve Best in Show was awarded to Alice’s dog Mabel who was handled by Emily Shutt, who was on holiday with her family at one of the Alice’s Escapes caravans."

Alice proudly founded Alice's Escapes to allow seriously ill children and their families to enjoy a relaxing holiday together in her caravans at Bardsea Leisure Park, in Ulverston.
