"I would like to meet all of you who have supported me and with your friendship I cannot go wrong."

The Ulverston resident made the decision to complete the swim after deciding he wanted to challenge himself more, in the wake of his father's death.

One of Mr Tyson's support workers, Geoff Beattie said the whole team was very proud.

"We've had people coming up to Garry and congratulating him in the street. "When we went to bank the cash on Saturday a customer asked what we were doing, when we told her she gave Garry £20 - the response has been fantastic," he added.

Mr Tyson's mother, Carol, 63, said her son was on a mission to set himself targets since the death of his father five years ago.

She said: "He's quite a determined young man and he's done very well.

"He had a head injury 36 years ago and so everything he does, he just needs to think about about it and he needs to have help for some things, but he likes to be involved and he likes challenges."
