STORIES of courage, selflessness and community spirit were aplenty as hundreds gathered for an annual community event.

The fourth annual Heart of Ulverston Awards were held at the Coronation Hall last night.

And there was not a dry eye in the house as invited guests heard inspirational stories against a glittering backdrop.

A surprise Lifetime Achievement of the Year award was given to Ralph Spours, a community champion who was recognised for the work he does to make the town great.

Meanwhile, Lee West, the father of schoolboy Josh, who tragically died from an asthma attack earlier this year, was awarded with the Sports Volunteer of the Year award for the work his does with Swarthmoor FC - and the courage he has shown since his world was turned upside down.

The event was opened by Evening Mail editor James Higgins.

He said: "The courage, community spirit and selflessness of the people we celebrated last night was simply amazing.

"The Heart of Ulverston Awards have proven time and again to be so inspirational, and last night was no different.

"A Huge well done to everyone who was a shortlisted finalist - and of course to the winners."

Other winners included Ulverston Inshore Rescue in the Community Group of the Year category and Stan Laurel pub boss, Paul Dewar, who was awarded the Citizen of the Year award, for 20 years of charity endeavour through his extreme sporting challenges.

The courage award went to brave Katy Galbraith, who has been battling brain tumours for the last 16 years, and her extended family whom have supported her every step of the way.

The rest of the winners were: Young Citizen of the Year - Kyle Simm; Employee of the Year - Janet Brown; Environmental Volunteer - Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group; Helping Hand Award - Margaret Aisbitt; Young Sports Performance of the Year - Molly Mae Jeffrey and UVHS Orienteering Group; Teacher of the Year - Graham Carrick.
