A LIFELONG political campaigner or a former town councillor will be elected to Ulverston Town Council tomorrow.

On Thursday residents of the Town Ward will choose their next representative after Cllr John Clough resigned in June.

Fed up with the politicking and councillors "having a go at one another" Cllr Clough felt he had no other option but to step down.

Residents will be asked to choose between Ulverston Labour Party campaigner Bob Brown, or former Conservative Ulverston Town Councillor Margaret Hornby.

Power on the council is finely balanced, with Labour in a majority of one with nine councillors to the Conservative's eight.

Speaking to The Mail, the candidates set out their stall on why voters should choose them.

Mr Brown, 65, of Ulverston, said: "I first joined the Labour Party in my 20s, I was active in my 20s and 30s, since I moved up here I got involved with my local branch."

His mantra is to be a vocal advocate for your local area, he continued: "I've a firm belief why let other people do this for you, be involved and be part of the community."

Asked what he would say to voters still on the fence, he said: "I'm the most local candidate, I live in the town, if it affects the ward, it affects me."

Mrs Hornby, 67, of Ulverston, served on the council between 2001-16. Since then she has retired, giving her "time to devote to the town," and return to the council.

She said: "I'm not big into politics but I care more about Ulverston and what happens here.

"I've had quite a lot of experience with the politics and the workings of the town council, I have the knowledge and I'm passionate about what happens in the town."

Mrs Hornby said she is enthusiastic to highlight the best of what Ulverston has to offer, in particular championing the festivals which draws tourists to the town.

She concluded: "People can vote for me because I'm passionate about Ulverston, I have the time and the heart to do it."

The polls will be open all day on Thursday between 7am and 10pm at the St Mary's RC Church Parish Centre in Victoria Road.

Only residents of the Town Ward are eligible to vote. Your polling card will not be required, voters simply have to attend.

The result will be announced on the night.
