A MAJOR project to build a bypass on a busy main road through a market town could help to relieve congestion.

In June earlier this year, The Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership announced plans to build an Ulverston bypass on the A590 to cope with an expected influx of workers and residents to the area.

South Cumbria is set to receive £25bn worth of investment with the planned introduction of the Moorside nuclear plant, Sellafield decommissioning and the confirmation of BAE's Successor programme at Barrow's shipyard.

There have been a number of collisions on the road in recent weeks and roadworks mean that motorists are often forced to sit in long queues of traffic.

Councillor Mark Wilson, mayor of Ulverston, welcomed the idea of bypass and believes that it could be the key to relieving congestion problems.

He said: "It pleases me to see that they are grappling with this issue because the A590 is already at or over capacity.

"Although it is years into the future it is a useful idea and aspiration and it would be good to see some funding attached to it.

"Anything that can help get the traffic moving is great."
