A CONTROLLED burn of heathland is being carried out today on Hoad, Ulverston.
The process is known as swailing.
Heather burning is legally restricted between the November 1 and March 31.
This avoids the period of active plant growth, the breeding seasons of reptiles and birds, and limits any adverse impacts on wildlife.
A picture of the fire has been posted on social media sites claiming that it is due to a Helicopter crash.
Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service have however confirmed that this report is false.
