Motorists have been left confused by signs for roadworks on the A590, leaving them unsure as to the plan for action on a notorious flood zone.

Signage approaching Lindal have stated that as of June 17, long delays can be expected for a period of three weeks.

Temporary traffic lights will only be in place during night-time hours (between 8pm and 6am) between Tuesday June 21 and Friday June 24; Wednesday June 29 and Friday July 1; and Wednesday July 6 and Saturday July 9.

However, temporary traffic lights will be in place constantly between 8pm on Friday, June 24 and 6am on Wednesday June 29; and between 8pm on Friday July 1 and 6am Wednesday July 6.

Keith Devlin, of Ironwerx Gym, in Barrow, says that the large matrix sign on the A590 should be displaying these messages for road users leading up to the area.

He said: "You would expect it to show the information really, yet we are still being told how long it would take to reach the M6. To me, it doesn't seem to be taking into account the roadworks."

In response to this, Highways England have said these predictions of times to reach the M6 via the A590 are calculated through the flow of traffic between areas and will take into account any roadworks along the busy highway.

They commented: "The information provided on the sign is based on actual traffic movements measure between points by automatic number plate reading technology.

"Journey times will reflect changes in road conditions including incidents and roadworks."

A resident of the Lindal area, Jack Smith, said: "Where I live you move straight out towards that main road so we will always have an idea of what the traffic is like on there.

"So far it seems that there has not been any disruption around the village."
